The outside world around us right now is pretty chaotic. The good news: there are some things we can all do to up our self-care game and help us feel better about ourselves and our situation no matter how down and stressed we may be feeling at this point in time.
Dr. Alok Trivedi, a health, human behavior and national stress reduction expert, who is author of the book ‘Chasing Success’ and founder of the Aligned Performance Center, offers these 10 tips:
– Ignore the world around you: Many people have difficulty tuning out the outside world and the news of the day. Being informed is one thing; being obsessed is another. While you should have a basic understanding of current events and the issues, know when enough is enough.
– Learn to be your best friend: It’s amazing when most people are having a bad day, they turn to outside forces to make them feel better. These external forces could be comfort food or a shoulder to lean on. That can be okay at times, but you need to be the one you turn to for comfort and support.
– Make time to spend by yourself. One of the greatest things everyone can do every day is spend a little time alone with themselves. Maybe it’s finding a quiet spot, sitting in silence, taking a hot bath, and just block out everything around you. Focus on how great you are, how much you love yourself, how beautiful you are and how good you feel.
– Wearing clothes that make you feel powerful. It’s easy to want to where the “in” thing or the most popular brand, but if you genuinely don’t like it it’s not going to make you feel good about yourself. Wear clothing that you really love and that reflects the person you really are.
– Do something you really love: A great way to show yourself some love is to get busy in an activity that is special to you. If it’s golf, hit the driving range. If it’s cooking, then get in the kitchen. Get involved in whatever it is your heart leads you to.
– Indulge your taste buds: We all know how important it is to eat healthy, exercise and take care of our bodies. Every once in a while, you need to have a little fun with your food. Just for a day, eat whatever you want and veg out on the couch binge watching your favorite show.
– Take a break: Taking a break from the everyday routine is good for your self-esteem and mental health. It’s okay to play hooky from work every once in a while and go to the beach, or do whatever you want. We all need a break to rest and recharge to perform at our best.
– Resolve a conflict: Maybe it was a squabble with your best friend. Perhaps it was a coworker who did you wrong. Whatever the case, be the bigger person and initiate a resolution. You’ll feel really good about yourself afterwards and holding grudges doesn’t do you any good.
– Follow your intuition: It seems as if everyone has an opinion on what you should be doing. Although well-intentioned, ultimately you need to make choices that you believe are good for you, not choices that other people believe to be right for you.
– Release your emotions: Holding in your feelings is terrible for self-care and emotional health. Find a way to get things off your chest. If you’re a more private person try journaling. If you have a best friend or other trustworthy person, talk about it. Consider a therapist if it’s really interfering with your daily activities.
