Oconee Cancer Care’s Community Event Spotlighted Advancements in Cancer Care

On October 23, 2019, Atlanta Oncology Associates of Lake Oconee (also known as Oconee Cancer Care) hosted Fighting Breast Cancer Together in Our Community for Lake Oconee residents at the Georgia Center for Total Cancer Care.

The event was designed to unite the community behind Atlanta Oncology Associates of Lake Oconee’s efforts to fight breast cancer. Survivors, caregivers, friends, and neighbors who are passionate about saving lives from breast cancer were in attendance. Speakers at the event talked about the latest technology to treat breast cancer.

Dr. Mark Quinn, Board Certified Radiation Oncologist with Atlanta Oncology Associates, provided an overview of radiation therapy and what patients should expect when they come in for radiation for breast cancer. He also presented a video showing the type of equipment used.

Dr. Robert Cowles, Founder of the Cowles Clinic, spoke about bringing more awareness to breast cancer patients and turning the Diagnostics Cowles Clinic, Navicent Health Baldwin into a breast cancer specialty center.  The clinic offers a range of imaging services, including the following:

Dr. Alicia Vineyard of Augusta Surgical Oncology discussed their center and their goals about coming to Lake Oconee and provide more support for breast cancer patients. Their surgical oncologists are part of the multidisciplinary cancer treatment team and are integral in determining a patient’s treatment plan using state-of-the-art breast cancer surgical treatments.

Dr. Paul Dale, Surgical Oncologist with Navicent/ Cowles Clinic, announced he will be starting a new clinic located in the Aspen Cottage.

“It’s rare you can get this impressive team of cancer specialists in the same place at the same time to talk about the latest techniques for breast cancer,” says Brandi Talton, Chief Development Officer for Atlanta Oncology Associates, who organized the event.

Talton also acknowledged Shelby Storey, part of the Lake Oconee Cancer Support Group who was instrumental in getting the information out about the event. Storey also spoke on behalf of the support group which meets inside the Cancer Center auditorium once a month.

Talton notes that the event was another example of Oconee Cancer Care’s longstanding commitment to the community to support the care and treatment of those touched by a cancer diagnosis.

“This event was truly a community-wide effort,” she says. “The goal was to bring awareness about breast cancer treatment in the area and educate people. We want everyone to know that in their own backyard, we offer advanced breast cancer treatments using state-of-the-art equipment. We hope to have more events like this in the community in the future.”
