Radiation Center at Cowles Clinic

Dr Mark QuinnOur Radiation Center at Cowles Clinic has been offering Stereotactic Radiosurgery for early stage inoperable Lung Cancer for the past decade. A recent large study of 300 patients has shown excellent sustained local control with minimal side effects. This data was presented at the Chicago Multidisciplinary Symposium in Thoracic Oncology.

SBRT for Lung cancer necessitates accurate and custom mapping of each individual patient’s anatomy and a way of accounting for breathing motion to optimally target tumors while sparing as much of the surrounding healthy tissue as possible.

Patients are treated with a vacuum-bag and abdominal compression to limit breathing effects. CT imaging is acquired to record tumor motion when at rest, full inhalation, and full exhalation. All patients receive 50 Gy in 5 fractions. Two treatments per week for 2 and a half weeks. Local control of the tumor was comparable to surgically resected tumors with minimal side effects.

The Radiation center at Cowles Clinic is proud to offer this state of the art technology for patients with Early Stage Lung Cancer.
