Ask the Medicare Expert: Chris Sheridan

Greensboro and Lake Oconee Medicare Expert Chris SheridanEvery two weeks, our Medicare expert, Chris Sheridan, a licensed insurance broker, and owner of Sheridan Insurance Group, will be taking your questions about Medicare and other health insurance questions you may have.

Have a question for Chris? Please email Harvey Kart at hdkart@aol.com or Daniel Casciato at writer@danielcasciato.com.

Q: How do I sign up for Medicare when I turn 65?

Chris: Thank you for the question. If you are already receiving social security benefits, you will automatically be enrolled into Medicare A and B and your card will arrive in your mailbox before your 65th birthday month.

If you are not already collecting social security, you will have to sign up for Medicare. The window to sign up for Medicare starts three months prior to your birthday month and goes through three months after your 65th birthday month.

You can enroll online through ssa.gov or enroll by visiting a local social security administration office.
